Illinois 28, Ohio State 21

What does a U.S. football score have to do with a blog on credit and bankruptcy? With that upset over the number one ranked team in the country, the University of Illinois is now the leading candidate for the Big Ten conference’s spot in the Capital One Bowl (according to CNN/SI and CBS Sportsline). How do I feel about my university possibly playing in a bowl game that is a three-hour advertisement for a credit card company that many view as among the most abusive and aggressive in the industry?

OK, I just can’t do it . . . . I can’t work up to frustration let alone sanctimony over this one. Few people picked Illinois to even go to a bowl game this year, let alone a New Year’s Day bowl. We’re 8-3 for goodness sake! And, no matter what Katie Porter says, we should have won that Iowa game. I’ll tolerate being in Capital One’s wallet for a few hours on New Year’s Day if that is the price that has to be paid.

By the way, did I mention that we beat the number one Ohio State Buckeyes over the weekend — let’s not lose track of the main point here.

And the Illini beat the Buckeyes on the Buckeyes’ home field!! Don’t forget that!

Ron Zook could take on a whole boatload of Capital One’s Viking mascots by himself. Or recruit them to go after predatory lenders. When Zook is involved the impossible becomes elementary.
